Brian Coffman
President and Chief Executive Officer
Brian Coffman is President and CEO of Motiva, a position he has held since January 2018.
He is responsible for guiding Motiva’s strategy, operations and resources to achieve its vision of becoming the safest and most profitable Americas downstream business. Brian is passionate about strengthening the company’s culture of safety, teamwork, empowerment and operational excellence across its operations. Under his leadership, Motiva has entered the chemicals business with the acquisition of Flint Hills Resources Port Arthur; achieved record-setting safety performance at the Port Arthur Refinery, which is the largest in North America; and established international trading.
He has nearly 40 years of industry experience in operations and executive leadership positions across the petroleum industry, having worked in Venezuela, the United Kingdom and various locations throughout the United States.
Prior to joining Motiva, Coffman served as Senior Vice President, Refining, for Andeavor (now part of Marathon Petroleum) leading the operation of 10 refineries located throughout the western United States from 2013 through 2017.
Coffman began his career with Conoco in 1983. While at Conoco, he served in a variety of capacities and locations including Upgrader General Manager and executive committee member at Petrozuata in Venezuela; President of ConocoPhillips Pipeline in Houston, Texas; General Manager of Bayway Refinery in New Jersey; and General Manager, Humber Refinery, and Lead UK executive in the United Kingdom.
He serves as a member of the board of directors of Motiva. He also serves on the board and executive committee of the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), the board of the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the board of the Greater Houston Partnership.
Coffman received a Bachelor of Science in finance from Brigham Young University and a Master of Business Administration from Utah State University. Following high school, he served in the United States Air Force and was active in the Utah Air National Guard.
