Motiva Donates $900,000 to Port Arthur-Area Schools for Post-Harvey Flood Recovery Efforts
HOUSTON – (Jan. 22, 2019) – Today, Motiva presented donations totaling $900,000 to the Port Arthur Independent School District and Lamar State College to aid the educational institutions in the Port Arthur community to further their Harvey flood recovery and rebuild efforts.
“Education and workforce development are important issues to Motiva and we are honored to contribute in meaningful ways to these two institutions,” said Ed Haloulos, executive vice president of human resources. “It’s important to invest in the people of Port Arthur, as they are the future workers and leaders of the community, and they could even be our future employees.”
Through the Port Arthur Education Foundation, Motiva donated $650,000 to the Port Arthur Independent School District. The donation will be used to purchase two replacement school buses that flooded during the hurricane and to make safety and security enhancements at schools and stadiums.
“We are so grateful for Motiva’s contribution to our district,” said Dr. Mark Porterie, Port Arthur ISD’s superintendent. “On behalf of the PAISD Board of Trustees, our students and their parents, we appreciate this contribution to purchase security cameras and transportation vehicles that we would not have been otherwise able to replace at this time.”
“We are extremely grateful for Motiva’s long standing and valuable relationship as a partner of the Port Arthur Education Foundation,” said Joe Tant, Director of Port Arthur Education Foundation. “Their very generous financial support as well as volunteer involvement in educational projects continues to make a positive impact in our community.”
Motiva also donated funds to Lamar State College in Port Arthur to enhance its Process Technology Department and support the $2 million grant they recently received to construct a new glycol processing unit at the college. The $250,000 donation from Motiva will go towards the processing unit, which will provide a hands-on environment for process technology students to grow their skills and be competitively positioned for jobs after the completion of the 2-year program. Motiva’s relationship with Lamar State College Port Arthur extends many years, in which time the organizations have partnered to provide mentoring and learning experiences for students and professors alike. Lamar State College Port Arthur will generously dedicate their new processing unit to Motiva.
“This donation is essential to building our new glycol processing unit,” said Dr. Betty Reynard, president of Lamar State College. “The unit is going to be greatly beneficial to our students, as it provides real-world work to give them more experience that they can use in their future careers.”
These donations are part of a larger commitment to the Port Arthur area to support the ongoing efforts to recover and rebuild from the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. To date, Motiva has donated over $7 million to Port Arthur to aid in disaster relief, infrastructure and drainage improvements, rebuilding efforts, educational support, workforce development, and more.
“This community is important to us,” said Greg Lucchesi, Port Arthur General Manager. “It’s not just a place we work – it’s home to many employees who work at Motiva. We’re honored to help provide a safe and engaging learning environment for students with these donations.”
